in collaboration with Laura Baird

Phantom Frequencies was a site-specific installation and performance featuring glass instruments made with the WheatonArts glass artists. The project riffed off Wheaton's origins in the 1970s as a fake Victorian village. Sited in the museum's lobby, a simulated Victorian parlor, the piece channeled the spirit of parlor music played by amateurs in their living rooms during the 19th century. Composer/multi-instrumentalist Laura Baird and I designed the instruments inspired by historic glass objects in Wheaton's collection and composed an original score that mined the history of glassmaking in South Jersey and TC Wheaton's rise from seasick sailor to pharmacist to glass factory owner. The piece explored the myriad ways glass can speak in a dialogue between the ghosts of Wheaton's past and the glass of some imagined future.
<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Music for Modernist Shapes was a site-specific
installation and performance that reimagined a 1936 theater piece Bauhaus alum Xanti Schawinsky made at Black Mountain College. The historic
performance, Spectodrama, included folded paper costumes, light projections and live music.
Composer/multi-instrumentalist Laura Baird wrote an original score drawing
on archival scores from Schawinsky’s performance collaborations with Black
Mountain College music teacher John Evarts, 1930s avant garde music and
Appalachian folk songs from the Black Mountain region. Laura and I activated my objects and costumes, conjuring the memory of
this little-known piece from the experimental college’s rich performance
history.

RAIR (Recycled Artist in Residency)
Philadelphia, PA
June 25, 2016

Music in collaboration with Billy Dufala

Songs of Memory and Forgetting was a site-specific performance at Revolution Recovery, a
construction-waste recycling facility in Northeast Philadelphia. As artist in residence, I spent six months sifting
through the mountains of rubble to collect personal items that arrived
from house clean outs, often after an elderly person died or moved into a
care home. The performance took audiences on an intimate song tour of
the site, navigating the sorting piles to explore the fragile nature of
memory. I collaborated with RAIR co-founder Billy Dufala on the
music, which we performed on instruments found in the dump. Inspired
by the collecting and sorting done on a massive scale by excavators and
front-end loaders, I activated objects made from thousands of
photos and garments rescued from the dump.

The project was supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.
Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery
Washington, DC

with Craig Woodward on fiddle and concertina

Hospital Hymn was a site-specific installation and performance that conjured the National Portrait Gallery’s history as a temporary hospital for soldiers during the American Civil War, where Walt Whitman worked as a nurse. Inspired by Whitman’s notebooks from the period, the piece memorialized the war’s quarter million unknown dead. Whitman suggests that their bodies became the compost of the nation—their spirits imbued in every stalk of wheat, blade of grass and flower that sprung from the dark fields of battle.
I enacted a ritual releasing thousands of handmade felt flowers, referencing Whitman's compost imagery and drawing on the language of Victorian mourning handcrafts to suggest the enormity of loss. Accompanied by Craig Woodward on fiddle and concertina, I sang 19th-century hymns that Whitman recalled hearing nurses sing to dying soldiers.

Hospital Hymn: Elegy for Lost Soldiers was a companion piece to the exhibition Dark Fields of the Republic: Alexander Gardner Photographs, 1859-1872. It was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery as part of its Identify: Performance Art as Portraiture series.
The Woodlands
Philadelphia, PA
September 26 - October 18, 2014

The Lost Garden was a site-specific installation and performance exploring impermanence and the fragile nature of memory. In the 18th century, The
Woodlands was William Hamilton's spectacular botanic garden and
greenhouse but it nearly disappeared in the rapid urbanization of the
early 19th century. The garden was saved from extinction by transforming
it into a Victorian cemetery, or "memory garden." Drawing on the
language of Victorian handcrafts like wax flowers under domes and
jewelry made from human hair, my installation of knitted flowers
memorialized the lost plants from Hamilton's garden. The performance
took audiences on an intimate song tour of the cemetery and into my
installation in Hamilton's 18th-century mansion to conjure the dream of
the lost garden.
The Weeping Dress was a performance and installation arising from research of Victorian mourning rituals. During a woman's first year of mourning, nothing she wore could reflect the light. That meant wearing wool bombazine or crepe, which didn't hold plant-based dyes so color ran from the fabric in the rain and heat, staining her body. I am fascinated by how this public performance of grief was experienced in such a private and corporeal way. I made a period mourning dress out of black crepe paper that I activated in performance to release the fugitive dye and leave a stain, or trace behind.

This installation grew out of investigations into how Victorian women gave presence to absence through domestic handcrafts and the ritual of wearing black. The fugitive dyes used in mourning dresses ran color and often stained women's bodies, transferring the symbol of the absent loved one from the dress to the body. I made a Victorian mourning dress out of crepe paper and cried on
it to release its ink and explore how the dress marks the body and the
body marks the dress.

Death Be Kind gallery is located in the bedrooms of a Victorian-era house. It reminded me of homes where Victorian women
would have endured years of lonely mourning. In response to this sense
of domestic isolation, I embroidered in white floss on black crepe paper several verses of an American folk song about a woman who, having been abandoned by her lover, vows to "eat nothing but green willow" and "drink nothing but my tears." I dripped saline solution on the embroideries to mimic my tears, causing the black ink of the paper to "erase" the white floss.

The Further the Distance, the Tighter the Knot was a performance installation that used Victorian mourning rituals, Old Time American folk songs and knitting to explore my longing for home as a recent transplant to Australia.
Dressed in a Victorian-inspired costume that I designed and hand knit, I led the audience on a "tour" of my installation. Playing with the convention of the didactic tour guide you might encounter at a house museum, I slipped back and forth between historic narrative on 19th-century mourning rituals and personal confessionals about my yearning for the home and garden I left behind in America and how my memories of that home were being clouded by nostalgia. Singing folk laments about lost loves and longing for home, I knit and unraveled love tokens for the audience as polite Victorian mourning customs gave way to more cathartic expressions of loss.
I spent 8 months in my studio hand knitting the costume and the objects, including a 35-foot banister cozy, and found the work at turns deeply comforting and totally maddening.
I showed performance videos and discussed my process for making costumes and how I use costumes to transmit stories and ideas in performance. Concurrent with the talk, ten years worth of my costumes were exhibited in the costume gallery. The two aqua costumes on the far left and the baroque undergarments on far right front were made by costume designer Gregory Nelson.Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08168728178763117899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9201434317469143745.post-25868476331633495802007-09-02T21:34:00.001-07:002012-08-09T09:11:09.935-07:00Dress Me Slow, I'm in a Hurry Evergreen Museum and Library
As the 2007 artist-in-residence at Evergreen Museum and Library, I was invited to make a site-specific work inspired by the house museum, its collection and history. I was fascinated by Evergreen's idiosyncratic patroness Alice Garrett, who, in addition to being an esteemed art patron and high profile wife of a diplomat, sang, danced and staged lavish productions she called Songs in Costume during the 1920s in an in-home theater designed by Ballets Russes set and costume designer Leon Bakst.
As an artist who has developed a performance form based on my passion for the music, obsession with costumes and an untrained stage persona (rather than undisputed vocal talent and acting skills), I felt a powerful affinity with Alice and developed the piece around our similarities and differences. Dress Me Slow was my own version of Songs in Costume. I sang songs drawn from Alice's repertoire of Irish and Spanish folk songs; wore costumes I designed and handmade inspired by the intensely colored costumes Bakst created for Alice; and shared monologues exploring Alice's conflicted artistic aspirations and my own ambivalence as a artist.
The belt suggests the ubiquitous Irish seaweed, with the brown i-cords on the belt, around my neck and in my hair referencing the ropey kind of seaweed. The "gloves" riff off cable-knit Irish fishermen sweaters.
It was inspired by a painting in the house by Miguel Covarrubias depicting Alice dancing the flamenco and a photo of Baltimore opera singer Rosa Ponsel as Carmen. The ruffles were hand died prior to construction and the bodice was hand painted.
Kelly taught me how to hand paint the designs onto silk for the harem pants and Turkish vest in the style of Leon Bakst. MICA Fiber student Hanna Brancato screen printed the sheer scarf as well as a theatrical backdrop in the design. All scarves were hand dyed.
Philadelphia, PA
July 31, 2006

As I researched John Bartram's garden, I learned that Bartram discovered
a small grove of trees in Georgia in 1765. He gathered the seeds and
propagated them in his Philadelphia garden and gave them to friends back in England. The tree was last seen in
the wild in 1803 and only survives today in cultivation. This story led
me to make this piece as a meditation on the extinction of plants and
the loss we experience when they disappear.
Using the same blue floss and white linen of the costume, I embroidered some stories I told in performance and made a book with photos from the performance and the embroideries. The embroideries were inspired by Victorian handkerchiefs, on which women often stitched secret messages for their beloved, and by vintage needlework samplers, which feature blocks of inspirational text or sage advice. Victorian women sewed samplers to record life events, rites of passage or life history. My embroideries record the loss of flowers.
The piece was built around the myth of Penelope, wife of Ulysses—champion of the Trojan War and hero of The Odyssey. Penelope endured 20 years of waiting for Ulysses to come home. When he didn’t return after the war, suitors demanded she remarry. She tricked the suitors by telling them she’d pick a new husband when she finished her weaving. For four years, she kept the suitors at bay, weaving by day and unraveling by night. I knit dozens of hats and scarves. I even knit my husband a surfboard bag. That bag was the basis of the knitting teacher’s dress. I have a hard time following patterns so I knit instinctively, making it up as I go along. I wanted to make the kind of dress that an obsessed knitting teacher would wear—one that screamed “handmade.” Purldrop knitwear designer Erin Weckerly crocheted Penelope’s coat. A crew of knitting friends helped knit the backdrops on size 50 needles.

top 3 photos: Aaron Igler
bottom 3 photos: J. J. I was fascinated by the way the brothers used their collections to reinvent themselves: They grew up the sons of middle-class Jewish merchants who went bankrupt but as the brothers amassed a fortune from selling rare books in the 1920s, they assumed the lavish lifestyle of English country gentlemen. I took the audience on a tour of the museum, focusing on objects that were pretending to be something else (chinoiserie mirrors, Empire furniture, Shakespeare forgeries) to examine how we use our objects to redefine ourselves. My costume was an exact replica of an 18th-century dress, constructed using a historic pattern but rendered in decidedly contemporary fabric.

I combined historic facts about the Rosenbach brothers' idiosyncratic collecting habits with stories about my own collections (ceramic nuns, fiesta ware, vintage bathing suits) to explore the obsessive nature of collecting and the culture of excess.

The piece was a collaboration with costume designer Gregory Nelson and installation artist Candy Depew, who designed and printed the fabric of my dress. Depew created a “period room” combining wallpaper and topiary of her design with objects from the brothers' collection where the performance culminated in a recital with harpsichord.

Photo: Aaron Igler

Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08168728178763117899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9201434317469143745.post-52610014875448598702007-09-02T20:24:00.000-07:002010-01-27T13:59:10.160-08:00The Garden

The Brick Playhouse
Philadelphia, PA
June 4-6, 2000
Directed by Joe Shahadi

This piece combined an Elizabethan folk song about a king who has to "cut his wife open" as she dies in childbirth to save their baby, with stories of my teenage brother's and my mother-in-law's death, and descriptions of my garden each season of the year to explore death and rejuvenation.Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08168728178763117899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9201434317469143745.post-26623648566994684042007-09-02T20:21:00.001-07:002008-11-27T20:33:42.732-08:00Girls on the RocksHERE Arts Center
New York, NY
August 2003

Directed by Greg Giovanni; Costumes by Gregory Nelson;
video by Nathalie Applewhite and Paul Haslett
with Michael Simmons on guitar and Lynn Major on cello

Girls on the Rocks explored my relationship to the lonely mermaid and siren—half-women/half-beasts who are outcasts, not fitting in on land or sea and longing for human companionship they can’t have. The piece was staged as a Zeigfield follies cabaret featuring an insecure mermaid in a leggy showgirl costume desperately trying to win over the audience in silence (the mermaid traded her tongue to get legs); and a smoky torch singer siren with an ostrich feather fan brooding over the loss of Ulysses, the one that got away.

Throughout the piece, I played with ways I seduce an audience with my voice—singing a coquettish duet with myself on video; imitating the terrifying wail of an air raid siren (the modern vestige of the mythological siren); and performing a lush, mournful lament.

top photo: Adam Wallacavage
bottom 3 photos: Jim RoseMarthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08168728178763117899noreply@blogger.com
